Between Corporate Careers and Creative Dreams: Why IndieGenius Chose to Document the Uncertainty

Most artists tell stories about finding their purpose.

IndieGenius tells stories about searching for it.

The Bengaluru-based duo, consisting of Vishagan Gugan and Ankith Adhyapak, didn't enter music because they had everything figured out. In many ways, their music exists because they didn't.

Like countless people who spend their days balancing responsibilities, ambitions, expectations, and unanswered questions, they found themselves trapped between two realities. One was practical, predictable, and familiar. The other was uncertain, creative, and impossible to ignore.

The tension between those worlds would eventually become the foundation of everything they create.

Long before IndieGenius became an artist project, both Vishagan and Ankith were simply music lovers with an unusually deep curiosity about sound. They spent years listening, analyzing, and appreciating music without ever imagining that one day they would be creating it themselves.

But curiosity has a strange way of growing.

The question slowly shifted from "How did they make this?" to "Could we make something like this ourselves?"

Then the pandemic arrived.

Like millions around the world, they suddenly found themselves confined to the same space for an extended period of time. What began as an experiment quickly became an obsession. One day they decided to learn a digital audio workstation simply to understand what it felt like to build a song from scratch.

Neither of them could have predicted what would happen next.

The first results were exciting. Then came more experiments. Then complete songs. Before long, they weren't just studying music anymore.

They were making it.

What started as curiosity had quietly evolved into a creative partnership.

Yet the music itself was never the biggest challenge.

The bigger challenge was the question that followed.

What now?

Unlike many artists who commit fully to music from the beginning, Vishagan and Ankith found themselves living a dual existence. During the day, they worked corporate jobs. Outside those hours, they built songs, developed ideas, and imagined alternative futures.

The conflict wasn't financial.

It was existential.

They found themselves asking the same question repeatedly:

What would life look like if we actually went all in?

That uncertainty became impossible to separate from the music itself.

In fact, it became the music.

Many of IndieGenius' songs explore courage, ambition, hope, heartbreak, optimism, and the desire to build a meaningful life. Underneath those themes lies a recurring question that resonates throughout their catalogue: how do you pursue something extraordinary while navigating ordinary reality?

It's a question many listeners understand intimately.

Most people are balancing competing versions of themselves.

The person they are.

And the person they wonder if they could become.

That emotional space has become IndieGenius' creative territory.

Their track Dhoondh perhaps captures this idea most clearly. Written during a period marked by existential questioning, the song explores the search for purpose and the exhausting cycle of validation that modern life often imposes on people. It isn't simply a song about confusion.

It's a song about confronting uncertainty without pretending to have all the answers.

On the other hand, For You reveals another side of their songwriting. Built around devotion, love, and emotional vulnerability, the track demonstrates the duo's ability to move between introspective themes and accessible melodies without losing authenticity.

That balance is part of what defines IndieGenius as artists.

They are genre-fluid without sounding directionless.

Thoughtful without becoming overly complicated.

Ambitious without losing emotional honesty.

Their influences reflect that same diversity. From A.R. Rahman and Arijit Singh to FKJ, Russ, Drake, and Post Malone, the duo draws inspiration from artists who built careers through individuality rather than imitation. What connects these influences is not genre but trajectory.

Each represents the possibility of starting with very little and creating something significant.

That aspiration is visible throughout IndieGenius' journey so far.

They have earned recognition from Rolling Stone India's social media platforms, featured on Indigo FM, and generated hundreds of thousands of views through their content. One particular video crossed nearly half a million views before being removed due to copyrighted IPL footage.

For many artists, moments like that become frustrations.

For IndieGenius, they became reminders that people were paying attention.

The momentum continues to build.

The duo is currently preparing three new singles in collaboration with Hyderabad-based label Raw Decibel Records, marking the first time they are working with external industry backing. It's an important step forward, not because it guarantees success, but because it validates years of independent effort.

Yet despite the progress, the challenges remain familiar.

Marketing.

Building community.

Finding performance opportunities.

Learning how to think like content creators while still feeling like musicians.

The modern artist is expected to master all of these things simultaneously.

And perhaps that is why IndieGenius resonates with so many listeners.

Their story doesn't feel distant.

It feels familiar.

Because at its heart, their journey isn't really about music.

It's about trying to build something meaningful while life continues happening around you.

It's about choosing creativity after work hours.

It's about investing in a dream before there's evidence it will work.

It's about continuing to create when certainty never arrives.

And maybe that's why their music feels so honest.

They're not singing from the finish line.

They're documenting the climb.

Every song becomes a snapshot of two people navigating the space between security and possibility, between responsibility and ambition, between who they are today and who they hope to become tomorrow.

The search for purpose may still be ongoing.

But through IndieGenius, they've already found something equally valuable.

A way to turn the search itself into art.
